Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete and descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team a clear picture of what you accomplished in your project. Name James Byng Title of Project Super Crime: An educated look at real life Vigilantism Project Start Date – January 27, 2017 Project Completion Date April 20th, 2017 In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was the impact of your project? My project benefited not only those who attended it, but it also benefited the image of the academy through some of the influential people that attended my project. With multiple school board members including the vice-president showing up, I was able to show how the academy was able to give me the opportunity to do something incredible my senior year. I also had the impact of educating 33 people on the reality of a topic that many people don’t even consider an issue. By showing the reality of vigilantism in comparison to how the media portrays it, I showed how media manipulates the image of things we see around us. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you? The difficulty of my project was centered in the writing of the novelette that consisted of almost 10,000 words. While I have written smaller stories over the course of my high school career, I have never written something on this scale or have any of my work be shown to the public. This project forced me not only out of my comfort zone, but it also forced me to write on a time schedule as opposed to writing when I felt like it. I also had the challenge of managing an event on a scale that I never had before, the challenge of holding people’s attention for an hour and a half using just information and myself put me in a spot where every moment had to be used effectively. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you learned/enhanced during your project.
Hosting an Event: Through holding my senior project at the central library, I was able to develop the skill of keeping people engaged with the topic of vigilantism over the course of an hour and a half.
Outlining a Book: Going headfirst into writing the book would be a foolish endeavor, outlining the book made me plan out my actions for not only this book but the project as well by forcing it out of my comfort zone which is improving the whole situation.
Writing a Book: While I enjoy writing I’ve never actually completed a story on this level, the project has enhanced my skill in completing a story on time instead of just lazily writing small bits each day.
Advertising the Event: Unlike other things I have done over the course of my high school career my senior project required a certain amount of people to attend in order to complete, through using Facebook events and creating a flyer the project showed me how important advertising early and on a mass scale to be effective
Managing helpers: Most of the time I am able to do things on my own, this project however required a bit of help from others. I learned through this project that I have to work with others but also direct them to complete setting up the event in a timly and neat fashion
List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly describe how you solved each.
Editing: I’m not very good when it comes to grammar and editing my own work which posed a problem with the books quality, I solved it by having my friend who is much better with grammar edit the book.
Constructing Trifolds: As I am not used to working with my hands on projects due to my dysgraphia so I had to use my computer in order to create all of the materials for my trifolds in order to solve the problem.
Communication with Venue: The Central Library did not stay in contact with me after I sent my form requesting the venue and had to keep in contact consistently to solve the problem.
Advertising: Never advertising events before, the prospect was challenging as I had no idea where to start but once I spoke to my senior project consultant and my parents I set up flyers for my school and a Facebook event to get to an even wider group of people to solve the problem.
List materials used: Computer Paper, Trifolds, Glue, Laptop, Chips, Cupcakes, Lifesavers List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given
Nancy Byng: Provided food for event
Veronica Byng: Helped set up event
Wes Byng: Advertised event in costume at library
Robert Byng: Took pictures at event
Dana Almberg: Helped edit book
Brandon Langley: Helped edit trailer
Keli Hayes: Helped set up event
Ms. Mason: Senior Project Consultant
Mrs. V: Senior Project Teacher
How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal. I feel it was for the most part the same but instead of having the event be like a ComicCon event I instead changed it to be more of a walk in museum style as I believe that it provided a better platform of relaying the information I was trying to convey to the public If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from experience? I would have advertised the day we finished paper defense panels and chose an earlier date for my project as to not conflict with the many things that was going on in April Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself? I learned that I am able to produce things better than I imagined them in my head as well as learning that when I do things ahead of time they are better than rushing them. What grade would you give yourself on the project? Justify the evaluation of your grade in at least 25 words.
Grade: 85
Justification: I believe that my project not only benefited from having school board members including the vice-president of the school board attend but that my project also showed an incredible amount of time and work through writing an entire book.
