Blog of week of 4/17/17
I have finally completed my senior project which takes a load off of my shoulders. It was not easy but it is done. Much has occurred since the last blog entry, including massive amounts of work in multiple different areas. I was able to complete my book, complete the trifolds for the project, complete a take away piece for the project, secure food, and ultimately host the event.
Firstly I was able to complete my book Super Crime that accompanies my project and has been the center of attention for much of my time in senior project. The completion of the book represents the biggest turning point throughout my entire project but it was far from the only thing that I was able to complete. As the project itself was a museum style event with information on vigilantes both real and fictional, using trifolds as a means in which to convey the information was a perfect choice. Having information on the real life superhero movement, the legality of actions superheroes commit, and further information on my book Super Crime.
Aside from those two completions, I was able to create a take away piece with information from my paper on vigilantism. Unlike the other components which was much more focused on conveying information through entertainment, this piece showed a much darker and realistic depiction of vigilantism in its purest form. Being able to get food for the project was another big step as an hour and a half long event would simply be boring without food accompanying it. Through my parents providing chips and water and my grandmother providing baked goods acquiring food was a simple task to achieve.
Finally I simply hosted the event which was amazing. Not only was I lucky enough to schedule my event at the same time and close to an event with school board members including the vice-president who were able to see my event, but I also had a hefty amount of people show up totaling up to 33 attendees. Overall the reception was positive and I am pleased with how my project went. This experience was a great one to have and I am grateful the academy has given me the opportunity to be able to do this project.

Blog of Week of 3/13/17
This week represented real progress made toward the completion and successes of my project by two core things being completed. The first major piece of the puzzle is that I finally got my confirmation email from the library. With this I am actually able to pay for the venue that I had reserved as well as feel confident in advertising the event more as I have a set in stone date and time. Advertising acts a major contributor to the project and with that step becoming to close to done that removes a serious burden on my shoulders.
The second major event was the final completion of my flyer. This could not come at a better time as with the date set in stone for the project the finishing of the flyer allows me to get it out to the masses. Going off of my consultant’s advice I’m going to have the flyer sent to different comic book shops around the tidewater area. This will increase my possible revenue of attendees as well as get it out to a different audience. The flyer contains information on the physical project including time, date, location, contact information, and contents of the actual event. With all of this coming together everything is looking good for the future.
The book itself is coming along and I am able to finish it faster as I am working on chapters not in the sequential order but instead in an order that I feel like writing as I have the entire story plotted out. I will be paying the library for the venue cost next week which should not be too much of a hassle its only 60 bucks so everything is good there. I am printing out images to start the work on the trifolds I bought so I don’t fall behind on the non-book aspect of my project.

This week I was able to move along my physical project while continuing my book along nicely. Most of this week was setting up things that I have to get done for next week by getting my friends assistance in doing my project. Not only was I able to get someone to help my finish my flyer, but I also was able to get a friend that would allow me to create a digital trailer for my event. I also got the markers that I needed to make for my trifolds and started to plan out what things are going to actually go onto the trifolds.
I also this week confirmed once again my date for my venue as the confirmation email never got sent. It was nothing to panic about as the woman who works at the desk that handles that happened to not be in that week. With that my venue date and time is still secure giving me plenty of time to continue to work on all aspects of my project.
My consultant also gave me the idea to advertise my project at multiple comic book shop venues such as Trilogy comics and Comic kings. These places will provide a great advertisement spot for my project as I am able to get people beyond my original target audience. While advertising at the library and on social media will get younger people, advertising at these locations will bring in an older audience that will give good diversity to my project. The book is continuing along nicely and the rough draft should be done by next week or middle of the week after.

This week some major progress occurred. Not only was I able to look around the library for a bit on Monday but I was also able to set a date in stone for my senior project. With a decent amount of time in between April 20th and now I have plenty of wiggle room if something goes array.
Aside from securing a date for the senior project, I also was able to continue working on the book as normal. With ideas coming from continuing discussion with friends and family on the plot it is becoming more and more thorough. The poster is also coming along nicely, with the secure date being set up I was able to actually add factual information to my rough draft of the poster. Thankfully with my skills using Microsoft Word developed in my Computer Information Systems class, I was able to make the poster both visually appealing while also giving the information I need.
I also was able to do some planning on what I will need once the project starts to commence. Trifolds, printer paper, scissors, glue, colored pencils and other objects that I will be using for my project will be bought or acquired over the course of the next three weeks. I have secured some people who said they would attend my senior project so I can get an estimate for how many people will be attending my event, but also by me helping and attending other events I will be able to have even more people come to mine.
I emailed my project consultant giving her the information and asking if she wants to see any of my documents, and with that it sums up most of my week. Right now I’m at a limbo where my project is a bit a ways away so I had this week focused more on a planning phase than a busy creation phase.

This week substantial progress was achieved in regards of my project that extends beyond just the book itself. However that’s not to mean no work was done regarding the book, the first chapters rough draft is complete and the prologue is about halfway complete with the story flowing through my fingertips. Continued meetings with friends on the story only strengths it as I am receiving criticism before the rough draft is even finished allowing me to think if what I want to put down is something that makes sense and not to bizarre.
Perhaps the biggest progress came from submitting my reservation form for the central public library, with the date being placed on Tuesday the 25th of April if everything goes well. While no one is here this weekend to make a final approval, I did receive an email the day I sent the form that it would be reviewed very soon. Although I did misread the form and had to email the library twice correcting a typo and error in date entry on the form, at the end of the day everything was worked out.
I also set up a kindle account to actually be able to publish the book without having to pay money from a more professional website or by printing off a lot of hard copies. It was by no means a difficult process as it was linked to my amazon account but it’s still another task that needed to be done. I also was able to secure a photographer for the event from a fellow LSA student which saves me the hassle of having to try and host the event while photographing it at the same time. The poster for my event has also been started but is not finish yet as I wish to have the date for the venue set in stone before I make a final copy of the poster but the ground work is all done. All of this in conjunction with meeting with my consultant is showing that my project is becoming closer and closer to actuality and not just words on a word document.

Blog of Week 2/13/17
You know when you write a book for your senior project writing a blog about your progress tends to become tedious. I could just type up a summary of everything that I write but ultimately I think that takes away from the story in the end. Instead I will simply speak on how I have come to the progress that I am currently at.
As I said before having the knowledge of the true face of vigilantism allows for more research onto crafting a world itself for the story to take place in. What started as a simple story about superheroes acting as vigilantes has grown into a sprawling world with a varied alternate history stretching back to the 1860’s. While this does not directly assist the message the book is trying to convey, it does allow the process in creating the story to be even more enjoyable. Many stress out about senior project but honestly the fact of the matter is this is simply entertaining. Research on facts about different states political and ethnic populations, facts on the Regan administration, and combining all of that with other knowledge and facts on vigilantism creates a world that to me is much deeper than a one dimensional story preaching a message.
The project is not all fun and games however, as the book as taken most of my attention off of the other piece of the project. After meeting with my consultant Ms. Mason, I have a better picture in my head of what the presentation at the library will be. Deciding to set it up with booths that explain facts about the book as well as information on real life vigilantism allows a greater connection between my project and my paper. Realizing my weaknesses is also detrimental in the library part of the project coming out successful. Ask anyone who has worked with me and they can tell you I have some of the worst handwriting so getting ahead on the setting up of materials for the library part will allow less stress down the line. So all in all this week has been making a better blueprint mentally for the physical part of the project and more progress on the book in whole.

So with real talk this was a productive week in many ways thanks to all the research I did during my research paper. The process of writing this book would normally consist of researching how actual vigilantes act in reality as to make the book as close to actuality as possible. The great thing is that I already did the research during my research. This leaves me with enough time to focus on the story of the book as opposed to the research as I have the resources available to me.
This does not mean that I have to do no research, as I am setting the book in both the 1980’s during President Ronald Regan’s second campaign as well as finding out information of the state of Wyoming since the story mostly takes place there. So with all of the time that I have at my disposal the minimal amount of research I have to do will be over with quickly and allow for the story to be great and interesting.
It was not only the book that I have worked on this week, after looking at my calendar I have determined three dates in late April to host the event at the library. Thankfully there is a perfect spot to nestle the event that does not conflict with other large events such as myself being away on a Forensic or Debate trip while also avoiding the last First Colonial Theater production. Not only will the dates avoid conflict with other large events, but they will also serve as giving me enough time to flesh out my story and characters to not only display the reality of vigilantism but also be a completing and actually interesting story. This journey is only beginning to start, and the door to possibilities is still locked but now is the time to buckle down and smash through it.

Starting this project to me is where the final year of my time at LSA will become difficult. The paper itself was a breeze as I acquired my sources early on and then regurgitated the information onto the paper. Not only that, but I had an actual interest in vigilantism and was not doing it just to have something to write about for a project. Now however, the real challenge begins as I have to take the information I have and transcribe it into something real. Regardless a challenge lies ahead of me that I cannot turn away from.
As my senior project is writing a book as well as having an event at the library to promote the book and give education on vigilantism as a whole, this means I have to be vigilant in getting my project set up. This week I have started the most basic of plot outlines for the book that is going to show how vigilantism actually is in contrast to how many young people view vigilantism as pure superhero stuff. The outline right now is going to combine the two ideas of negative real life vigilantism and superhero glorification of vigilantism to create something entertaining as well as showing the real problems of vigilantism.
As for the library event, I have contacted the library and they gave me a number to call to finalize the set up and how much holding a room costs per hour. I also contacted my senior project consultant Rebeca Masson and have not heard back from her but given it’s a busy week for sophomores at the academy that comes as no surprise.
